During the 1970's the Monrovia Fire Department decided that F1246 needed more compartment space. It was decided to sacrafice the hard suction intake hose trays and add high side compartments. Phenix Equipment in Los Angeles performed the modification. On top of the high side compartments was a flat hose tray that would carry two 2.5" hard suction intake hoses. The high side compartments are rather not that good looking. We decided remvoe the high side compartments and install hard suction trays.
It was rather interesting project that took three years. It took a total of four Crown Fire Engines to get the parts needed for the hard suction trays and a stop to the Honolulu Fire Department Maintenance Shops on a family vacation to get some parts for the trays as well. Many thanks to the Monrovia Fire Department for provided pictures that aided in the restoration of the project.
The restoration of the Hose Tray's started in the fall of 2008 and we are now completing the restoration this month November of 2011. It has taken us three years to track down the parts, wheel and deal. We took the following steps in the restoration:
1. Confirm that the pumper did in fact have three hard suction trays, through pictures provided by
the Monrovia Fire Department.
2. Through CFE (Crown Firecoach Enthusiasts club) able to acquire the parts.
3. F1293 Ex-Los Angeles County Fire Department pumper Ex-Engine 21 provided a majority
of the parts, thanks to Ruth and Hewy Wick.
4. Hawaii pumper F1415 also provided some parts.
5. Removal of the high side compartments
6. Build up of the hard suction trays and mock up.
7. Sand blasting of hard suction trays and hose clamp bases.
8. Powdercoating of the hard suction trays and hose clamp bases.
9. Ploshing of hose clamps
10. Replace all nuts and bolts with brand new grade 8 nuts and bolts.
11. Re-installation of hard suction trays.
